02 The bounty's requirements

    Any 64-bit ARM phone, Android 8+. Tested on a Pixel 8a with GrapheneOS, Oct 21.

  2. Inside 12 GB of RAM

    One model loaded at a time. Setup picks the model by the phone's memory.

  3. Under 50 GB

    About 2.7 GB by default. The 50 GB budget is checked before every download.

  4. Offline, no network calls

    Answers come from the phone. The internet is used only for downloads you start.

  5. No Google Play Services

    The rc1 APK was audited: none.

  6. Open and reproducible

    MIT code, one Gradle command, every model and dataset documented.

A library first, then the model.

BOAR finds the passages on the phone, asks a local model to answer from them, and shows you which ones it used.

05 Big Boar · Boar Labs

A 35B model on a phone, most of it on disk.

The bounty names one promising direction: extreme mixture-of-experts, with most of the weights living on disk and only a small part active for each token. Big Boar runs exactly that shape today.

  • Qwen3.6 35B, a 12.3 GB file, runs on a 12 GB phone by reading its experts from storage instead of holding them in RAM.
  • 73 of 73 questions completed on Oct 19, median 3.35 tokens a second, about 2.5 minutes an answer.
  • Thermal state stayed normal the whole run. The battery went from 27.2 to 41.2 °C.

Alpha, off by default, and slow: answers take minutes. We measure it in the open and say so.

    Install, set up once

    Open the APK on the phone, or adb install it. The standard APK downloads the answer model, the search model and the library once, while a setup guide walks you through the look, your files, a PIN and Boar Labs. The offline APK unpacks in seconds and skips the download.
